The Incomparable of The Non-comparable

Summary

It's always strange to me when they accuse Jean-Luc Godard of working on a film without a screenplay. On the contrary, his screenplays are extremely accurate as seen in this short film. The pictures we use in the storyboard come from different scripts written by JLG while preparing to shoot Film Socialism. For these collages, JLG uses different types of static photographs: locations, actors, costume rehearsals, newspapers, commercials, books, etc., giving us details about accessories we will need later (books, clothing, etc.), as well as offering ideas for framing and sharpening of individual frames. JLG uses very simple materials: scissors, markers, ballpoint pens, photocopies… Many frames from Film Socialism eventually turned out to be very similar to these pre-production collages.
