VAFI on Kanal Ri - International Children and Youth Animation Film Festival

Published: 03.06.2020.

11th VAFI & RAFI – International Children and Youth Animation Film Festival in Varaždin and Rijeka has begun on Monday, 1 June.

Dedicated to animated film, the festival is being held for the eleventh time in a row this year, and from 2018, in addition to the VAFI section, dedicated to films by children and youth from around the world, the festival is enriched with a new RAFI section dedicated to professional animated films for children and youth that has been held in Rijeka in the past two years in collaboration with Art-kino.

The concept of this year's edition as well as the realisation of the Festival is quite different from previous years, therefore cinema screenings of animated films from the VAFI section will be replaced with  television broadcasting. This opens a new opportunity for the presentation and affirmation of children's and youth's film creativity to an even wider, television audience.

From 4 June until 7 June, viewers will have the opportunity to watch films selected for this year’s section of VAFI festival on Kanal Ri. VAFI section is divided into three categories – MINI, MIDI and MAXI, depending on the age of the film authors (age groups: 0-10, 11-14, 15-18 years old). Every day on the Kanal Ri will be broadcast two blocks of films from each category, and the last day, 7 June, is dedicated to the winning films selected by two juries, one consisting of Veljko Popović, Maya Yonesho, Ciarda Tobin and Jayne Foley and other consisting of Maja Flego, Marina Barišić Knežević and Ana Dokler who award films that promote children's rights with Blue VAFI.

Moreover, Kanal Ri viewers will have the opportunity to watch three reportage on the topic of animation (stop-motion animation, traditional animation, computer animation), as well as a footage on the exhibition From Imagination to Animation: 6 Decades of Zagreb Film opened on 30 January 2020 at the Zagreb Museum of Contemporary Art.
