Film Under the Stars - New Season of Summer Art-kino Has Begun

Published: 02.06.2020.

The first half of June in the Summer Art-kino brings new and award-winning titles every evening at 21:30: Italian documentary film Selfie by Agostino Ferrente, Berlinale winner Synonyms by Nadav Lapid, Who You Think I Am starring Juliette Binoche, Italian drama Piranhas, and a rerun of the multiple award-winning Parasite by Joon-ho Bong.

On the first day of June, Art-kino has opened its summer residence in the courtyard of the Capuchin Monastery of Our Lady of Lourdes, where Summer Art-kino film screenings will beautify starry nights in Rijeka for the eight season in a row.

After the opening ceremony of the only summer oasis of film in the city centre - the presentation of the new book by Rijeka publicist Velid Đekić It Is Important Not to Fear the Evening Train (Važno je ne plašiti se večernjeg vlaka), and a screening of the cult Croatian film H-8 by Nikola Tanhofer – the rest of the summer brings film programme every evening at 21:30.

The first half of June brings to the Summer Art-kino recent and award-winning European and worldwide films. Therefore, the French-Italian documentary hit Selfie directed by Agostino Ferrente will be screened on 2 June. The film is analysing the circumstances of the inadvertent murder of the 16-year-old Davide Bifolco during a police chase in the infamous Neapolitan Traiano district. In doing so, the director gives the two best friends of the deceased young man a mobile phone and a microphone with instructions to record their own lives as a selfie film. The result is an impressive and fun collage of adolescence, strong friendship and a life in which the future is often determined by social and family environment.

The following day, 3 June, the Summer Art-kino brings the winner of the last year's Berlinale - the film Synonyms by Nadav Lapid. Based on the author’s actual experiences, the film tells the story of an Israeli who comes to Paris determined to erase his Israeli identity and past. However, in Lapid's eccentric and tragicomic story, the ghosts of the past do not disappear so easily.

The tense French drama Who You Think I Am starring Juliette Binoche is on the summer programme on Thursday, 4 June.  Premiered at the Berlin Film Festival, the film follows Claire who creates a fake profile on social media in order to track down her former partner. For her role, the great Binoche has won Swann d’Or for Best Actress at the Cabourg Film Festival.

From Friday, 5 June, another Italian title on the Summer Art-kino programme is the crime drama Piranhas written by Roberto Saviano. Gomorrah’s father creates another realistic story of Neapolitan youth involved in teenage gangs war. The film was awarded the Silver Bear for Best Script at the last year’s Berlinale.

Due to the great interest of the audience, the best film of the year, Parasite by Joon-ho Bong will have two reruns on the (Summer) Art-kino big screen. The wicked story of a family from the bottom of the social ladder that begins to build its better tomorrow by infiltrating a wealthy Korean family has garnered more than 250 awards in the past year, including four Oscars (Best Picture, Best Director, Best Original Screenplay, Best International Film). The film will be screened on 8 and 10 June.

Summer Art-kino film screenings will be held every evening at 21:30 in the courtyard of the Capuchin Monastery of Our Lady of Lourdes. The entrance is through the cinema, and in case of bad weather, films will be screened at Art-kino venue. Tickets can be reserved by email (ulaznice@art-kino.org), and purchased at the Art-kino box office every day an hour before the start of the first screening or via ulaznice.hr platform.
